Windows Vista is diferent to Windows XP when it comes to editing your hosts file. Windows Vista has extra protection and although you may open the file and make changes, you cannot save them as you do not have permission. You need to run your editing program (ex Notepad) as administrator.

Step-by-step on how to edit your hosts file:

  1. Browse to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories
  2. Right click “Notepad” and select “Run as administrator”
  3. At the UAC prompt, click “Continue”
  4. Click File -> Open
  5. Browse to “C:WindowsSystem32Driversetc”
  6. Change the file filter drop down box from “Text Documents (*.txt)” to “All Files (*.*)”
  7. Select “hosts” and click “Open”
  8. Edit and save as normal
